Human-AI Technology Lab at UVA

Mission

The Human-AI Technology (HAI) Lab develops intelligent technologies that understand, adapt to, and support people in their everyday lives. Our research lies at the intersection of artificial intelligence, human-centered computing, ubiquitous and mobile computing, and health, with a focus on translating multimodal data into meaningful insights and personalized technologies.

We develop computational methods that integrate data from smartphones, wearable devices, physiological sensors, digital interactions, and emerging sensing technologies to model human behavior, health, and well-being. Our work spans computational behavior modeling, personalized and adaptive AI, AI-enabled health monitoring and intervention, human-AI interaction, and safe interactive learning systems.

A central goal of the HAI Lab is to move beyond AI systems that simply make predictions toward technologies that can understand individuals in context, explain meaningful patterns, and provide personalized support. We investigate how behavioral and physiological patterns evolve over time, how AI systems can account for individual differences, and how people can meaningfully interact with and benefit from their own data.

Our research is highly interdisciplinary, bringing together engineering, computer science, health and medicine, behavioral science, and design. We collaborate with researchers, clinicians, and communities to develop technologies that are technically rigorous, human-centered, and capable of addressing real-world challenges.

Ultimately, the HAI Lab seeks to advance a future in which AI does not merely analyze human data, but becomes a responsible and adaptive partner for understanding human behavior, improving health, and enhancing quality of life.
